Lighting a candle is an act of self-love. It is the signal we give to our mind to say: "Now we relax". But for this ritual to remain a moment of pure well-being, your soy wax candle needs a few small, but essential, attentions.
You often ask me why some candles produce black smoke or why that annoying "hole" forms in the center. The answer is almost never in the quality of the wax, but in how the candle is cared for.
Here is my practical guide to transforming your candle into a long-lasting and safe experience.
1. The first light: don't be in a hurry
Soy wax has a "memory." The first time you light your new candle, make sure you have at least a couple of hours available.
-
The secret: Leave it lit until the entire surface of the wax has melted evenly to the edges of the glass.
-
Why it matters: If you extinguish it sooner, the candle will begin to create a central "tunnel." In subsequent lightings, it will only burn downward, wasting all the wax on the sides and drastically reducing the scent's longevity.
2. The wick: the 5-millimeter rule
This is the step that makes a difference for your health. Before every lighting, always trim the wick. It should be about 5 mm long.
-
Why do it: A wick that is too long creates a tall, unstable flame that produces black smoke (particulate matter). By trimming it, you will maintain a clean and steady burn.
-
For your health: If you suffer from chemical sensitivity or autoimmune diseases, a "clean" burn is vital. Less smoke means less stress for your immune system and purer air in your home.
3. Extinguishing without smoke
Blowing out a candle is the most common way to extinguish it, but it is also the least recommended. By blowing, the wick continues to burn for a few seconds, producing acrid smoke that masks the fragrance you have so carefully diffused.
-
The expert's tip: Use a candle snuffer or, if the candle is in the amber jar, gently place the lid on top. The lack of oxygen will extinguish the flame instantly, preserving the pure aroma of our certified fragrances.
4. The ideal time
Do not leave the candle lit for more than 3-4 consecutive hours. Beyond this time, the container may overheat excessively, and the fragrances (even those certified by IFRA) could suffer thermal stress, which alters their olfactory performance.
A small reminder: Profumi di Casa candles are created with natural soy wax and fragrances selected to be safe. Taking care of them serves not only to make them last longer, but to honor the time you dedicate to your relaxation.
